Gamification Part 5: How Do Games Motivate Players?
You’ve done well! Here’s a badge! This kind of reward system is common in games. Feedback and reinforcement can produce learned behavior. This is called operant conditioning. However, sooner or later, extrinsic rewards time out and lose their power. Points for no value actually lower motivation. So what is it that keeps players in the…

It’s 7:30 am. We have to be in the car to drive carpool in twenty minutes. Our 8-year-old son is still in his pajamas. This happens every morning. I wonder if I should dress him myself or force him to go to school in his pajamas. I know one thing; this is a problem that…
What is Emotional Control?
Some individuals maintain equilibrium under very trying conditions. These people are able to stay in control of their emotions and make rational and wise choices. When we lose emotional control, we respond with the fight or flight response. Our brains respond to stress as a perceived danger, with the fight, flight, or freeze effect. When…
Kid Friendly Rubrics
This summer, I’m blessed to be working with some talented, creative kids. Channeling that talent while they also work on reading, writing, and spelling is not easy. It’s easy to fall into the habit of over functioning while the kids sit back and take a passive role. That’s why one of the most important skills…

Richie is in 8th grade. He is assigned to general education classes. Academic testing indicates that Richie decodes and comprehends text in the average range. In math, computation and concepts and applications fall in the below average range. In math class, Richie has difficulty controlling his impulses. When the bell rings, his classmates sit in…
Passover Seder Game Prototype 1

I love that Darko creates an environment with Jewish values, and Jewish friends (as it grows, more friends that are age appropriate will make it even better!) …DARKO encourages davening (I would challenge Darko to focus more on that aspect of it)…encourages parsha knowledge (Cocoa club!) and I love that extracurriculars like robotics, art, yoga, and other aspects of life that are stimulating and engaging make school fun! While they are enriching, the field trips present challenges logistically and present opportunities to do better with time management (advance notice). I love laptops and ipads instead of books!!…I love no homework! The challenge is making sure that the learning that the student does have available (Rosetta Stone on laptop, Achieve 3000 & Wordly Wise on ipad) need to be part of her overall learning program with check in times and facilitation as necessary…I love the goal orientation with teaching to responsibility (climbing Har Sinai and Gematria)…& I think there is an opportunity there to challenge them to have more of a goal orientation towards their general studies subjects as well.
also love that she’s learning about technology (power point presentations and imovie) and those sorts of things that will serve her in the world in which she lives!
